A Gift from a God

“Are you sure you’re all right in there?”

“For the third time, yes.”

“There’s no need to get cross with me, Tomos. I’m only thinking about you.”

“I know, but I’m feeling so much better since...”

“Since?”

“Oh, never mind.” Can’t a man empty his bowels in peace?

“I just wanted to let you know your aunt is on her way. If you need me, I’ll be on the South Wall Battlements finding out how that fool, Ironfoot, managed to allow a full-scale riot in his jail.”

“You really don’t like him, do you, Uncle Kurzon?”

“No, I certainly do not—especially his unwavering compassion for the lower castes. It won’t be the first time he’s failed to take a hard stance on them to protect the kingdom.”

Don’t you mean the Communion and their antiquated caste system? “I’m sure you’ll be able to find a solution that’s agreeable to both of you.”

“Humph. I doubt it.”

Nothing good will come from that confrontation. Tomos listened to his uncle’s footsteps trail off before hearing the bedchamber door slam shut. He eased off the wooden board and cleaned his rear with a handful of hay. “Ah! That’s bloody sore.” Well, at least I’m not shitting in my own bed anymore. Dropping the soiled hay into the circular hole cut out of the solid plank of wood, he shuffled to a basin of freshly poured water and stared at his reflection in the mirror on the wall. That’s odd. He leaned in closer to get a better look and rubbed his jaw, twisting his head to view both sides. Never seen that before. He pulled back and squeezed his shoulders, noticing how firm they were. The door to the bedchamber opened and then closed. Must be Aunt Yanna. He washed his hands and reached for his robe. Tying it loosely around his body, he opened the door leading to his bedchamber. “Good afternoon, Aunt Ya—”

He froze to the spot, unable to speak, his mind whirling, his stomach churning, barely managing to look at her piercing blue eyes for more than the briefest of moments. “K-Kaitlyn?”

“Hello, Tomos.” She stood in the middle of the room wearing a red woollen robe, embroidered with an endless looping pattern of gold thread that decorated the hem of the garment. Her long brunette locks trailed down her shoulders, stopping just short of her waist.

“Y-you can’t be in here. They’ll catch you.”

“No, Tomos, they won’t. I’ve got friends in high places now.”

“Who?”

“It doesn’t matter who they are, just that they made sure we won’t be disturbed.”

He stared, wide-eyed, as she bit her lip and edged closer to him—each mesmeric step stoking the embers of his desire for her, almost extinguished by his illness and his father’s betrayal. “I-I don’t understand.”

“It’s very simple, Tomos,” she said, stopping a hair’s breadth from his awakening body. “I have a message for you.”

“What message?”

Her eyelashes fluttered and the corners of her mouth curled up into a sensuous smile. She leaned in close, allowing her breast to brush past his chest, and sent a shivering wave of pleasure across his skin.
